Viren began his career as a qualified accountant in the commercial sector gaining experience across industries such as telecommunications, healthcare, and retail before transitioning into the education sector over 18 years ago.
He joined The Open University (OU) in 2015 and currently serves as CEO of OU Worldwide & Director of Employers and Partnerships. In this role, Viren leads the Business Development Unit, overseeing the university’s commercial activities and building relationships with employers and partners at local, national, and international level.
Under his leadership, the OU has broadened its offerings to develop skills-based solutions that support employers and partners in addressing workforce challenges. These initiatives range from introducing Higher & Degree Apprenticeships and Micro credentials to offering short courses and empowering FE colleges. Viren collaborates with over 2,800 organisations to bridge skills gaps, address workforce shortages, and promote lifelong learning. Viren’s focus extends to regional initiatives, particularly in the South Midlands, where he champions digital skills, green jobs, and health-related development.
He has worked closely with government bodies, including the Department for Education, and local employers to drive economic growth and social mobility.
Additionally, he has directed thought leadership efforts in the skills space, including the annual Business Barometer in partnership with the British Chamber of Commerce.
